"The United States of America Army takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with V Device to Private First Class Matthew Atienza for heroic achievement in action while serving with attacking forces in or around Reichswald, Germany, March 1945. After the rest of his squad was destroyed in an intense ambush, Private First Class Atienza took it upon himself to single-handedly assault the enemy position. Armed with only an Assault rifle and advanced knowledge of guerrilla tactics he proceeded to eliminate over half of an enemy squad in rapid assaults and flanking maneuvers before being fatally wounded. His courageous act was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Armed Services."
